Pete and I have had our summer more or less filled with things other than hiking, so I was excited that this weekend we could finally go camping and get two days in. We had a good time even though we were seriously out of practice in packing our stuff (I forgot about 1/3 of the things we needed for camping) and shape (oh lord am I out of shape) and motivation (I think Miss. Ambitious got left lounging on the beaches of the Outer Banks).

I'm also out of practice writing trip reports and since spraining my hand in NC will need to give an abbreviated version for time's sake.

Moriah:
*via Carter-Moriah trail.
*last time we did Moriah was winter breaking trail and it was god awful. this time was better, except for my feet killing me. pete was not on the brink of death this time - always a plus.
*too many PUDs for a tired girl
*really cool rocks on this trail. as confessed before, i have no idea about geology, but this trail struck me as something that might be interesting to someone who does
*napped for an hour on the top. sweet jesus that was nice.
*saw 4 purple mushrooms on the way down - did not know that they made purple mushrooms

Boott Spur
*ditched our plans for Isolation after getting huge blisters on Moriah (damn wearing nothing but flip flops for a month)
*up Glen Boulder Trail, down Boott Spur Trail
*I vote Boott Spur Trail > Glen Boulder Trail
*if I have it in me, next time I do Iso I'll ascend Boott Spur Trail. Seems like a bitch below treeline to go up, but GBT isn't a picnic either.
*amazing day to be above treeline - Happy Hiker Kelly returned in all her glory upon looking into Tuckermans Ravine from Boott Spur Trail
*want to hike Lions Head trail up to Washington this winter
*peakbagging hasn't got ANYTHING on a hike like this is weather like that. isolation in summer can wait til next year.

called in sick this morning because i couldn't physically walk out of my apt and down to the bus stop to get to work. haven't had blisters like this....ever. thankfully they loosened up and i got into work after lunch. remind me to never go 4 weeks without hiking again. also, remind me to hit the gym.

Good to hear you guys getting out to hike finally.

i hated Boot Spurr with a passion though so in hindsight, i would've gone down GB (and that's not much different)

Very nice guys. Too bad about the blisters. I've been fortunate enough to never really had any issues with blisters. Knocking on wood right now. Smile
Two years ago after going up to Boott Spur, I vowed to make it a yearly trip but I haven't made it yet this year. Sad

Nothing wrong with some lounging in the Outer Banks. Those are some of the best beaches I've ever been to. Lighthouses, wild horses, hang gliding, fishing, fresh seafood and of course Brew Throughs. Doesn't get much better than that.

On the other hand blisters definitely suck. I'm nursing some nice ones of my own, kind of like yours but on the bottoms of my feet, because on a day hike to do the Crockers and Redington two weeks ago I arrived to find out I'd left my socks on the couch when we left at 4 in the morning. At first I thought it was pretty comfortable to hike with no socks and the whole sock thing was just a big conspiracy and that they really weren't needed at all. After about 4 miles I changed my tune and after about 12 miles and wandering some random logging roads, because the map isn't all there, I decided I won't be hiking without socks again any time soon. Two weeks and the skin is peeling and it still feels like it just happened yesterday. Crying or Very sad

Glad to hear you're back. Get those blisters healed, do some tuning up and get back on the trails for some fall hiking.

Those are some nasty blisters Shocked Looks like you scrapped a lot of skin off your back heel. You may want to check out the fit of your hiking boots or socks.

Pictures looked great, and thanks for sharing.

Well, if there's any silver lining it's that the skin in that area should harden and make the next trip easier. Shocked

Some great pictures in there besides the blisters.....eeeewwwww those hurt me just looking at them

Love the pics, especially the ones of the alpine grass and Tuck's. And I agree that going up Boott Spur is better than going down; I like going up it and coming down Lion Head. Wow, those blisters do look nasty! I've been lucky not to get 'em that badly, just a wee bit on the big toe or pad of the foot behind it. There's been a couple of sheets of moleskin in my homemade first aid kit for about 12 years that I've used once, and it does work if you don't wait too long to use it. Glad to hear you got back out there on the trail, it's been close to thee weeks for me and I'm sure I'm gonna feel it the next time out.

Pete didn't carry you to work? Razz

Coolness, except the footies. You should wrap them in bubble wrap for a month. Cushy, and fun when they snap.

When I first saw the title I thought it said "back in Acton" - thought you had moved again. Smile

Suppose I should really break down and tackle the Carter/Moriah range...

Yikes - didn't get an alert that all of you fine folks were commenting!

Thanks for the foot sympathy. Unfortunately the picture I put online is far more attractive than what they look like now, with cracking and oozing and all of that fun stuff. The good thing is that they don't hurt much anymore, so I'm hoping I'll be back to wearing shoes (either bike or hike) this weekend. I've never had 'em like this before...and hopefully won't again.

Kathy - we did our century ride in July and finished! We weren't as well trained as we were last year, but we got through it pretty well. One of our group had to drop out at mile 60 because of a back injury, but the remaining three Beer Guts on Bikes made it to mile 102. We have another one in the end of September that should be interesting given our lack of time to train. The good thing is that it's not a race, but the bad thing is that the other person who will be riding with us is training a lot so he might just leave us in his dust.

Salty - Pete didn't offer to carry me. Hrumph. Chivalry is dead.

Oh my God, the close up of the blister almost made me sick. Those are tough, tough blisters. The pics are great. I relly like the one with the huge rock sticking up all by itself.
