 Kinsman "Unofficial Campsite"?
Good afternoon, I'm doing an overnight on Kinsman and this will be my first trip on this mountain. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can find an unofficial campsite near Kinsman pond. Just in case the tentsite is full or for some more privacy.

Thanks!

I don't know of any other specific sites but I do know it's illeagal to camp within 1/4 mile of established camp sites, shelters, huts etc. The pond is about 1/4 mile long too so if there is anything it would be past the southern end along the Kinsman Pond trail. It's flattish there so you might have some luck finding an established site or suitable spot for a small tent. 1/4 mile above is probably in the alpine zone and also illegal.

That may be tough as I believe that there is no camping allowed within 1/4 mile of Kinsman Pond Shelter/tentsites. Perhaps ypu can find something a short ways down Kinsman Pond Tr.

And being that it's on the AT there's a good chance there's a few trail-side spots in that area outside the 1/4 mile circle. That's usually the case. I just don't remember since I haven't been there none winter in a few years. But here's a map with an approximate 1/4 mile circle around the shelter. I see a few spots that should at least be level.

I would wager it won't be bad at the shelter as the mega bulk of thru hikers made their push into maine over this past weekend.

We did Kinsman via FJT this past weekend for Flags. We were surprised to learn there were no thru hikers at the shelter but we crossed paths with a few larger groups heading in to the shelter....
