We've been getting a couple spammers that have been getting through the system. If you happen to notice that a spam post is up for more than a day, Just PM the spammers screen name to me and I'll nuke them.

Hey Jim, I've had to delete over a dozen spam posts in the past 2 days.
Do you know of a way to delete the spammer? I can only delete the posts.

Hope all else is well!
Bill

No, I do not know how to block a spammer. I, as well, have been just deleting as I go along. In times past, the spammer would also hit the Flags on the 48 website since I believe both sites are on the same server. Chris, however, put a passcode for registration through the Flags site and if this spamming continues, it might be time to do that here as well.

Usually the spam is in bursts of three or four posts and then it moves to another screen name. I should check the IP addresses on all these to see if they match.

We appreciate the heads-up Joe and Scooter and everyone else that finds them if Jim and I don't see them first.

Can we define what spam really is? If it's just unwanted or frivolous posts, well, there's this guy Salty who has well over 2,000 posts here.... :P

Also, Due to fat finger syndrome, There may be some whole topics that accidently get deleted. The last time we had this occur, I wiped out some good trip reports on accident.

I happen to think Salty's posts can be highly educational. (you can pay me later Mike)

just an idea throwing out there ....
1) moderators should be able to delete an offending account
2) all new registrations have read-only privileges
3) to upgrade to being able to post messages, registrant must donate a one-time only nominal fee ($1 ?)
OR
be vouched for by an existing member
OR
?other ideas?

maybe this could be semi-automated with dreamlink - at least telling you who just donated ....

might involve some work upgrading registrations, probably be less work than

yeah, yeah, yeah I liked the open registration here too, but OTOH, Jim & Bill are running around playing whack-a-spam with no end in sight .... doesnt seem fair ....

This explains a lot!

The original reason I ended up a moderator was because of spam. It was MUCH worse several years ago and I am hoping this is just a small hiccup that will go away soon.

It's really not much work, just a couple mouse clicks.

Hey Jim,
In the past 2 days I've deleted over 20 posts from Antonia8815.

Usually it is just the one or two spam posts and it's been easy to clean, but this guy doesn't seem to like his spam to be deleted and comes back with a vengence after each post is deleted.
Wouldn't mind having rights to delete this one poster.
Bill

PS They're obviously putting LSD in spam now
