 Keep the Women-specfic forum?
The "Women and Hiking" section of the forum has seen precious little activity over the past year. What are everyone's thoughts, is it worth keeping? Is there value in it? Or should it go away and issues can be addressed in the other forums?

There is a great value if women respond. Less than great if they do not. I'd say wait a few weeks and see if they post their thoughts. I hope they do. What do you say ladies?!

Hey Chris,
I agree with Magic. I have found that the women's hiking community has been growing in leaps and bounds. More girls and women are on the trails than ever before, and a specific forum dedicated to their needs and questions is unique right now. While it may not be utilized that much right now, hopefully as word gets out about Hike-nh.com's approach, dedication, and forethought to have such a forum, more people (not just women) will look to this site as their source of information and support to assist others in all aspects of hiking.

You're a pioneer, dude!

I second and third what Pucknuts and Mtnmagic said. Hiking really is not a gender specific hobby. Take a trip on a Saturday up the Falling Waters-Franconia Ridge-Old Bridle Path loop. I bet you'll find a fairly even split gender wise and if I am wrong, I would say it would not be over a 60-40 split. You see lots of couples out there and quite frequently see female only parties out there. Women who hike solo would be wise not to broadcast their trip plans and I believe that may have something to do with not much usage.

HI! I agree with Silent Cal about some women not wanting to broadcast their trips for all to see - or broadcast their concerns, to a point. I know this is one of my concerns! I'm even a little apprehensive about meeting people for hikes for the first time - I guess group hikes would be good for now :) I believe that most people on sites like this are just good old outdoors people and mean no harm - but there is always the chance that someone is on the lookout...sad but true.

Happy trails :)

Okay, as a former IT Manager I should be able to do better, but even when I just went looking for it, I couldn't even FIND the women's forum. So, that would make it tough for me to post there. I say keep if for now, and since it's been brought to everyone's attention, even those that are challenged--such as me!--might post. I don't spend a lot of time poking around, I just in to the discussions that seem interesting without searching around. I'm lazy these days.

Thank you hubby, for fixing your wife's obliviousness. Well, addressing my blind spot, anyway. Chris has made a slight change in the title of the General Hiking Chat in the Women's area to make it more obvious to the sleep deprived--me. Thank you, honey!

Rethinking this idea. It's not gotten any attention in months and it's an irresistible magnet for porn spam. I'll give this forum another month, and if it's still stagnant, I think I'll remove it.

Thoughts? Persuasion?

Yup, seems like the only posts it has generated lately are the kinds we don't like on this site.

I say time to let it go.

Well, it's done. The women-specific forum had almost no activity except for spam bots for almost a year, so it's officially toast. Sorry for anyone who may have posted in the future, but it's pretty clear the forum wasn't valuable. Thanks to all who weighed in on the effort, and sorry for the drop in post counts for those who did.
