I have been researching for the best hardshell that I can wear in a 5-day downpour and winter hiking, something that won't weigh me down and be somewhat breathable. I was wondering what you guys have and which one would you choose out of these...I think I have my decision, just would like to know yours...

Arc'Teryx Beta LT Hybrid - $280 ($350 original price)
Arc'Teryx Alpha SL - $217 ($275)
OR Foray - $173 ($215)
Marmot Speed Light - $290 ($450)
Marmot Essence - $150 ($200)
GoLite Malpais - $150 ($250)

Anything with Arc'Teryx on it is first tier.

Having said that - all of these jackets will probably do the trick in terms of being waterproof from the elements. But keep in mind that sweating will wet you from under the jacket, and there's a lower limit in winter to a jacket being breathable - the breathable layer is permeable only down to a certain temperature.

So - check for fit/features and overall weight. A winter shell tends to be heavier (and warmer) than one designed for 3 seasons. Ultimately, it's a compromise as there's no perfect jacket.

I always wanted that Arc'teryx Hybrid but seeing that sale on the Marmot Speed Light has gotten my interest. I also have read great things about the Essence

If you buy Arc'teryx make sure it's from a reputable place/site. My friend picked one up online last year. The zipper broke and he sent it to them. They returned it with a letter saying it was a fake.

I've North End Sport Red 78654 Dynamo Hybrid Jacket. It is water resistant finish and durable to washing and dry-cleaning.
