Which model boot did you have HWC? I have the Bryce and have had none of those problems.

Like I said, my favorite boot ever, and maybe the best part is on longer hikes (10+ miles) I get no blisters or even hot spots. That never happened with any of my boots before. After my last 15 mile loop in the Catskills a couple weeks ago my feet felt like they could go another 15 miles. My legs however begged to differ! :D

I really like Keens as they have a good toebox, and have two high tops plus a pair of low-tops I use for cycling. I like a beefy boot for hiking, so rarely use them for hiking. Did use a pair for doing a Grand Canyon N. Kaibob/Bright Angel loop once though. Mostly I use the Keens for knocking around the place, walking with my wife, etc, but not on trails in the Whites or elsewhere.

I mostly now get Salomons and lately Asolos, and they tend to be high-end boots - $175-$250+ full-retail range, but never actually pay that much. I wait for closeouts, Deal-of-the-Day at STP, etc. I get about 2 years before they need to be resoled. I usually use Dave Page in Seattle, which costs about $85 including shipping. His re-sole jobs are better than the original in my experience. I also have a pair of LL Beans Cresta, which still have lots of miles left on the original sole, as they're a bit light for me, especially in the toe bumper (or lack thereof). Good boots though.

That's my experience. I should add that I usually hike twice a week, and switch over to Cabela's Avalanche boot when it gets cold.

Here they are GG. They look like , but I don’t think those are them. These are my wife’s boots with about maybe 12 years on them. There’s no way we paid $52 for them....I only wish we did! I remember thinking….wow, those are expensive. (I was kinda new to hiking back then and didn’t know how much good boots cost). But I’m positive they cost more than that. Now that I’ve been hiking for a good amount of years, the high cost of a good boot is worth it. Look at the thread she still has, and the good condition they’re still in. Mine don’t look as good as hers…but like I said, I can still and do still use them during the winter when I put on micros.

IMO….these were the best boot around! The people at EMS even told me that people come in still to this day asking for them. I don’t know why they stopped making them,.

I think I'll take a pass on the old smelly boots GG.
My wife's are still good. Me...I don't care. I'll get another pair.
I don't mind spending $$ on boots. They're very important.
It's Fathers Day. I should be getting 2 EMS cards from my kids.
:D "YES"! :D

keyz:

Your wife's EMS boots look like the LLBean Cresta Hikers. Basic all leather classic hiking boot, made by an Italian company called AKU. They make some of their boots in Italy. Some in Romania.

I have two pair of Cresta Hikers. Never had a blister or hot spot with either of them, even wearing them straight out of the box.

------------

GG:

I think the Keen I had home to wear around was the Targhee II. Mid-height. Keen's waterproof/breathable liner. I had the Cresta Hikers to try at the same time.

I bought new boots yesterday. I was ready to dump at least $200 or more down on a new pair, but I tried a few on….the KEEN boots felt the most comfortable on my feet and don’t need to be broken in. I have a double wide foot size, so I’m kind of limited to my choices. The KEENS were $130, but I did see a really nice pair for $235. The thing is, they were very stiff and the bottoms weren’t soft enough for rock skipping across brooks. They also hurt my feet. The young lady helping me at the boot area told me, with the more expensive boots, that hurt because it takes time to break them in, I could get about 4 years. The KEENS, that were comfortable, and cheaper in price, would only last about 2 years. So if you add the whole thing up, I have to buy new boots about every 2 years. But it still comes out to the same cost if I bought the more expensive ones.
2 years at $130, vs 4 years at $235. So it equals out in price.

Thank you EMS workers for your time and help!

Old KEENS. You can see the split of the sole and boot. (2 years old)
