 Overnight in the Whites
Hey everyone, me and a few friends (all experienced hikers who have done many overnights in the Whites) are looking for any suggestions for an overnight trip this weekend. Our last hike was late November when we did Moriah and stayed overnight at the IMP shelter.. so anything like that would be ideal. I'd love to be able to tackle a 4k or two, but would take other suggestions where the summit isn't 4k but offers good views... anything come to mind? thanks in advance! Matt

Hey Matt,

Just curious, did you do the hike the weekend of the14th? If you did I'm pretty sure I saw you guys a couple times that weekend when we did this hike... http://forum.hike-nh.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8951&sid=a3a672457eb5e1560b05f25a1286e808

If that is what you guys did are you looking for another 20+ mile hike, something like the Bonds with a night at Guyot? If you haven't done that one that's a drop the mic/walk off right there! Or a shorter 12-15 mile trip like a Paugus/Passaconaway loop of sorts? There's great legal camping spots on the upper ledges of Paugus. Hard to give a lot of ideas without knowing more what you're looking for and where you've been but I'm sure people will come up with good suggestions if we know just a little more.

We saw some of those yesterday (Paugus). One looked like it had its own mini sidewalk!

Yes, that was us. We took the Stony Brook Trail to IMP Shelter to Moriah, spent the night in the shelter, and went back down the Stony Brook. That trip is about 10 miles total round trip which is fine for us.

We have done Chocorua and stayed at camp penacook shelter, we have done garfield and stayed at 13 falls tentsite, we have done kinsman and stayed at kinsman shelter, we have done baldface and stayed at baldface shelter, we have done moosilauke and stayed in beaver brooke shelter..

Hopefully that gives you a better idea of our typical weekend trip.. open to any and all suggestions, tent or shelter.

I was just looking at coppermine shelter but cant tell if that trail goes through to the summit of cannon or not?

Well if you can handle 10 miles a day for both days Bonds traverse with a night at Guyot, or even an out and back from Zealand, is hard to beat. Only the Presis and Franconia Ridge (maybe not even that) can top the terrain. If that's a little too much maybe a variation of this loop Image. Spend the night on the Paugus ledges and then add on Square Ledge and Passaconaway the next day. Probably comes to about 15 miles. There was a nice looking fire ring up there.

 Re: Overnight in the Whites
I want to save the Bonds for a nice clear summer weekend, but that's definitely on my list.

The weather on Friday looks miserable, and saturday night into sunday looks like rain as well. So adjusting my plan to try and tag 1 or 2 4k peak(s) on saturday, starting out early and getting a full day in, before setting up in a lean to by nightfall Saturday seems to be the better plan.

Thoughts on a shorter (loop is ideal, out and back is OK) hike that offers a shelter somewhere along the route... and tackles at least 1 4k peak?

the coppermine trail doesn't have an option to go all the way to Cannon?

Coppermine Trail is nice and goes to a nice water fall, but doesn't really come anywhere close at all to the summit of Cannon.

You CAN get there from here, but it's a roundabout route. You have to go to the Mittersill side first, hiking along the x-country ski trails over to Tuckerbrook. It's nice in the winter. Not so much otherwise.
