 Sawyer River Road closed?
Hi, Was thinking of doing Carrigain, but with the shorter days now I may push the hike back to later in the winter if the road is now closed. I imagine that the road is closed, but can anyone confirm this? That extra mileage may be an issue for a December hike.

I reckon you're SOL - http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/white ... width=full

If it's any consolation though, the roadwalk would be pretty easy by headlamp!

for kicks, it took me 8 hours roughly back and forth from Signal ridge summer trail head to summit and back not counting the road walk Lastish day of Winter. I would leave before dawn at the Winter Trailhead this time of year. The road is cake, but id want to be on it during the dark hours. But this is me, and that hike beat the junk out of me. I also had my own personal demons at the river crossing and had a tough time finding the trail with a ton of snow shoe tracks in all directions at the junction of the Carrigain Notch trail.

And for more kicks

I can tell you first and it is closed. parked at the winter lot and walked up the icy road a little ways looking for a Christmas tree yesterday. but if you bring some ice skates you can probably date from the signal Ridge Trail right back down to your car. :) not sure how the AMC would feel about that but technically you're on foot!

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. I haven't been skating in a while, since the varmits in my basement chewed off the laces a few years ago, so I think I'll push this one back a bit. Fortunately I did the hike a few years ago in August, but have been wanting to go back.

When I did Carrigain last year, I had the luxury of biking the closed road portion. :)

If you were doing it for the AMC patch. I'm afraid it doesn't count. You gotta walk or ski the road if its closed. If you aren't. Then it doesn't matter.
