I picked up a pair of snowshoes at ocean state job lot for only $45 this weekend.

I imagine they aren't of the best quality, but I've never snowshoe'd before so I figure they will be good for just starting out.

+1.

I used my entry level snowshoes for a few winters before buying more expensive ones this year. That allowed me to make a much better informed decision.

As previous posts stated, what you use them for determines what features are important.

If you are using the snowshoes as a tool to hike on established, mostly broken out paths, then smaller size and ability to stow them in your pack are important.

If you are using them to explore off trail, a bigger foot print is better.

Nice Gary!

Here's my collection:

Hey Tim, some serious flotation available on that pair on the left :)

The bindings aren't that great, and they don't turn well in the woods :O !

The pair on the right are MSR's with 8" tails ....

Nice collection Scooter.
If you want a workout, the ones on the left are the way to go.

I got some MSR's for Christmas and just picked up some Garmont boots to go with them the other day, just waiting for the snow too!

I just picked up a pair of Tubbs Flex Alps at EMS (good sale). Between the 3 of us, I think that guarantees we will have no snow this winter

I also would like to thank you for your bribe to the snow gods. 4 brand new snow tires for my car are my contribution this year :D

I think I'm settled on the Flex Alps too after reading the threads and trying the things at EMS. Maybe Sunday at the demo day in Peterborough.

And I got new tires AFTER barely making it home in the October storm. It would be nice to put them to use at least once.

Total thread drift here...but...I am so totally with you guys. I bought 4 new snows for my college-age son so that pretty much clinches it I think.

Said tires finally saw snow today, for the first time! A whole whopping 1-2 inches of slush fell last night, and with the low-40s temps and some rain today, it's all gone :D

That said, I'm heading to the Whites this weekend, hope to see a nice snowshoeing layer on the ground!
