Post subject:  The Osceolas: any tips?

I'm going to hike the Osceolas on Tuesday- a day I have off from school. I'd like to do one last big hike before my hiking season basically ends. I'll try to hike both the main peak and the east peak, depending on the weather and how my dad and I are feeling. We're going to take the Mount Osceola Trail from Tripoli Rd.

Is there anything I should know about this hike, such as trail conditions and parts that are difficult to negotiate (such as the chimney)?

By the way, I know that I said in a previous post that I might hike it in October, but I found out that I had the 20th off, and my dad happens to have it off too, so I figured that going then would be better than going when there could be snow and ice.

Go either side, east to main peak or vice versa. Tripoli Road side is the easier option of the two IMO. As far as the chimney section goes, it isn't that bad. It leaves you an "out" if you don't decide to descend/ascend it.
Either way, have fun.

Hey! I hiked the Osceolas in May and did East first (very small summit) and then the Main Peak which I loved. The chimney wasn't bad. I know when I did the tripyramids last week Osceola was closed, but may be open now. I would check before you make the trek up there!

What exactly was closed? I know part of Greeley Ponds Trail is closed, but are all approaches closed off?

The approach from Livermore Trail Road. I'm not sure If it's still closed or if all of the trail heads are closed. I would think it would be open by now, but I would call the ranger for that area just to check. The picture I took is here: http://4000-footers.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... amids.html 2nd picture down.

I believe Tripoli Road was closed AFTER the trialhead for Osceola.

Thank you all for your input! I'm glad that Tripoli Rd. is open, and I checked that site that woods dweller posted for both road and trail closings, and the Mt. Osceola Trail isn't listed as closed.

It looks like it's going to rain on Tuesday (tomorrow). I just hope that I can get some kind of views.

I did the Osceola's one week ago today (Monday). I did it from the Greeley Ponds side so not a lot of common ground, but there were people who came from the Tripoli Rd direction.

And like everybody says, the chimney a) isn't bad at all, b) can be dodged.

Have fun!
