Hiked Hale via the Firewarden's Trail this weekend. It definitely lived up to the hype. Very pleasant trail, nice scenery, and easy to follow (despite being at that kind of ugly-ish in between season snow cover stage of the year). So even though the summit was still cloudy, cold, and all around viewless we had a nice ascent and descent. But we also had a run in with a kindly gray jay at the summit, so even that part was redeemed for us :)

Hiked Hale in Mid October from Zealand Falls. Had and inch or so of snow and the pesky Gray Jay at the summit.

That's cool to hear. More evidence that we need to try the Firewarden's Trail.

Nice report. I've always read that the Fire Wardens' Trail is one of the best snowshoes after a good snowstorm. Something about a great birch glade?

I imagine it would be beautiful. Very good for skiing. It was extremely easy to follow this past weekend, but I wonder if it might be more difficult after a big storm (or after skiiers ski across the trail) just because it IS so open in a lot of places.

Some of the upper switchbacks, prior to the trail reaching the spruce, can be hard to follow if the snow covers over the old roadbed cut in my experience.
