 Re: The list, round 1
I've found Shannon to the pretties of what I've crawled over in the Belknap range. Both for its solitude, the bit of extra time it takes to get there, and the lovely view of lakes spread out below you. It's a shorty though. Belknap itself was ok, imo.

I don't know anything about half of the peaks that are listed. I would suggest if you continue forward with a list, to at least include a link, short description, or something for the plebeians out there who aren't hardcore hikers with a Rolodex of mountains in their heads. Like where it is, what range, things like that. It will makes it accessible, exciting, and usable.

Belknap is sweet and I hate you all. I've been there three times and liked it each one. I can see this is a losing battle, but know that I'm cursing each of you.

Maybe better views if you climb to the top of that radio tower? :lol:

For those adventurous enough Bemis is a good hike, but it definitely includes a segment which is very "bushwhacky" (yes, that is a real word). I highly recommend it, but don't think it's appropriate for a non-bushwhack list.

Well, it is Friday, and the first polls now open. They will close as of Monday night (unless we deem it necessary to stretch it longer) and the first part of the list will shape up. So here we go. Let the voting begin......

My votes:

Avalon yes
Bald - Artists Bluff yes
Bald - Monte Rosa yes on condition it is lumped with Monadnock as a "suggested route"
Baldface, North Yes on condition it is a combo with South Baldface
Baldface, South
Belknap no
Bemis no
Black (Benton) yes
Black Cap yes
Boott Spur yes

Personally I am sticking to the idea of if it needs a tower to get the view it is not getting a yes from me. I know that means kicking some good peaks off (like Joe mentioned, K-sarge North) but what can I say. If enough people feel differently then I am happy being the lone dissenting voice. :lol:

Avalon yes
Bald - Artists Bluff yes
Bald MR - no
Baldface, North no
Baldface, South yes
Belknap no
Bemis no
Black (Benton) yes
Black Cap yes
Boott Spur no (I'm not sold on this, anyplace above treeline will have views)

I'm in the camp of combining adjacent peaks into "hikers choice" (either or both); for me this will apply to the Baldfaces, Moats, Percy's, etc.

I'm also for specifying routes where applicable.

If it's a hikers choice I'm curious why we'd pick the south peak on either Baldfaces or Moats. North is higher on both. Subjective, but I think the north summits also have the better views for each also. South is actually shorter than both Middle and North Moat. If a mountain has two summits, both with great views wouldn't you take the highest one for the name on the list, even if either is optional?

I think I'm going to vote for towers, as long as the list is flexible and willing to remove them if the tower is closed for some reason and there are no other views.

As for Boott Spur (and peaks like it) if it is officially recognized as a summit on the USGS topo's I'm in favor of it. Yes any alpine zone has views but without this list requiring some sort of prominence and/or distance anything recognized officially as a summit is fair game to me if someone wants to nominate it as a unique enough viewpoint to be worthy of the list.

Like I said, I'm not convinced for Boott Spur. I'm okay with using peaks above 4000 feet, but I feel like they should provide a unique view that the 4k's around it do not. What do I get from Boott Spur that I don't get from Washington or Monroe? Hight, Guyot, even Clay provide unique views. If we're going to include Boott Spur, Franklin, and Little Haystack just because they're unique SUMMITS which provide views then we should also be including Truman, S. Moosilauke, the other Adams peaks, Nelson Crag, etc.

For my Baldface, I chose arbitrarily. I have not been and cannot speak to whether 1 is better than the other. I'd word it as "Mt. Baldface - hiker's choice for summit" on the list.

If you feel differently, feel free to vote differently 8)

Avalon=yes
Bald - Artists Bluff=yes
Bald - Monte Rosa= Can take it or leave it
Baldface's= yes If you don't do the loop , you're crazy. :P
Belknap= NO!
Bemis= no
Black (Benton)= yes
Black Cap= yes
Boott Spur= yes

My take on places like Boott Spur and Clay and such is their view perspective. Of coarse you get a different perspective from any given spot, but the view perspective from those 2 (there may be more) is particularly awesome. IMHO

Avalon -- Yes
Bald - Artists Bluff -- Yes (GG's pics were convincing)
Bald - Monte Rosa -- Yes (as a suggested route to Monadnock)
Baldface, North -- Yes, as a Baldface combo
Baldface, South -- not separate from N peak
Belknap -- Yes, of course, who wouldn't vote for this delightful peak!
Bemis -- No, but now I want to go
Black (Benton) -- Yes
Black Cap -- Yes, again thank you GG
Boott Spur -- maybe we should have had a more focused conversation regarding the way to handle this before we stared voting. I suppose I vote yes, but if there was a swell of support for restricting the list to under 4k I wouldn't object to that either

Just to give everyone a full and complete chance to get their votes in I will let this one go a bit longer before tallying votes. But that should not stop us from moving on to the next batch of ten for the discussion period.....

 Re: The list, round 1
OK, I think it safe everyone has had their vote, so the final tally is:

Avalon -- Yes-7 No-0
Bald - Artists Bluff -- Yes-7 No-0
Bald - Monte Rosa -- Yes-2 No-1 (when considered as part of a "suggested route")
Baldfaces -- Yes-7 No-0 (when we consider them together and not separately)
Belknap -- Yes-1 No-4
Bemis -- Yes-0 No-4
Black (Benton) -- Yes-6 No-0
Black Cap -- Yes-7 No-0
Boott Spur -- Yes-4 No-1

So peaks in bold are winners and have made it to the list! I will probably edit the "List Roll call" initial thread with the winners so we can keep track as the final list starts to take form. :beer:
