So sorry to hear that HL! And right as you were getting back into the game too. Hope the recovery is as smooth as it can be.

I know u do Joe, 2-3 months, I am crying, devastated, mad at self... maybe I'll by a kayak, spend the summer on the water. I was so looking forward to getting out there.. ugh I was thinking of you when I came to my acceptance of it. They said when u age your muscles get stiffened, I got too excited and over did it and then to kick myself in teeth, kept on doing it and fortunately no surgery, but crutches and off of it and all the usual, P.T. blah blah. Ugh :( if I do it again, surgery it is. Woo hoo. Dummy, dummy, dummy,....

When I sprained my knee early in March, folks here consoled me saying it was a good time of year to do it (spring shoulder season - ice, mud, etc,). You get to miss the blackflies! I hope you recover soon!

Age - just another number.

You gotta train smarter; not necessarily harder. Don't let this set you back. You can turn this perceived negative into a positive. Get a gym membership or buy a cheap set of weights. Work on your upper body and core strength. Or figure out how to do this with just your body weight. It can work.

Kayaking is pretty sweet. We got some for Christmas. Even without a torn muscle I hope to use them quite a bit this year. There's certainly worse ways to spend time recovering.

I hope you recover quickly and well. There's good advice in this thread even if hard to take sometimes as the injured one. It's an opportunity to work on strengthening and conditioning other parts of your body and finding alternatives to hiking/running which you may enjoy equally or nearly so.

It's easy to say - being injured sucks. But, it can continue to suck or it can be an opportunity for something you may not have done had you not been injured. Good luck! Somehow I feel like stretching my old calf muscles....

I bought a kayak following a hiking injury. That boat kept me out of the woods for a full two years.
There are so many lakes and streams around, be careful that you don't injure your hiking hobby permanently.
