History Lesson: White Mountain Lost Trails Project Website
More in the sense I'm looking for a history lesson. It's an older website that seems to have been lost to digital history.

The Wayback Machine gives an idea of what it looked like: https://web.archive.org/web/20140128161422/http://www.whitemountainlosttrails.com/

Anyone have any info about this website? I saw it mentioned just today while looking over Steve Smith's blog and I found this post on vftt. http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?37784-White-Mountain-Lost-Trails-Project-Website

And mentioned here: http://sectionhiker.com/opinion-the-limits-of-volunteer-trail-maintenance-in-the-white-mountains/

What's the dealio on it? History is of interest to me. Trail history would be awesome sauce to look over.

There is this but it's not the same thing? http://www.franklinsites.com/losthikingtrails/

I don't know anything about that website, and this one doesn't deal with lost trails specifically, but if you like history of the Whites in general and haven't seen it...

I remember reading something about that website a while back. It was a great source of info, but somehow something went wrong. And Luddite that I am, I could not even begin to explain.... It would be nice if it could get resurrected and disinfected somehow. I know some people are fascinated by old trails and will look them up, hike them, and post reports, etc.

If someone else had the data and we could decide what kind of site we wanted, I'd be happy to buy the domain name and host and maintain the site. I already maintain my own so one more wouldn't be much extra work.

The site was around for quite some time, but didn't, at least in my estimation, get a lot of updates. It went away for a while, and magically came back, I believe under new ownership as I briefly conversed with the owner. For a while. Then disappeared yet again. The gem of that site, to me, was not so much the reports, as anyone with some savvy could look into those old trails, it was the collection of AMC maps that they had.

I personally loved the old hand drawn logging railroad maps. Such a cool piece of history. It gives a different prospective to the areas we tramp.
