HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. Often, on a trail (Garfield comes to mind immediately) I have sung this song on my return trip. "This is the trail that never ends. Yes it goes on and on my friends. Somebody started hiking it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue hiking it forever just because.....this is the trail that never ends. Yes it goes on and on...................................."

I had to pipe in because you may get this, but this reminded me of, for some reason:

This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The theme to Garry's show.
Garry called me up and asked
Would I write his theme song?
I'm almost halfway finished,
How do you like it so far,
How do you like the theme to Garry's Show.

Always nice to see your input Salty, but I got nuthin'. 1986 was not a year that I spent a lot of time in front of a TV set. 8)

I'd rather climb it another 20 times before I'd set foot on Hale. Mt. Chocorua has 8 trails up it with tumbling stream, waterfalls, tons open ledge and views for days. Hale has...umm...Hale has... OK. I give up. What does Hale have again???

Hale has, among other things, the quiet and solitude made available partially by the throngs all over on Chocorua, hiking up by all manner of trails, from all compass points and then some.

I will grant you Chocorua can be a zoo if you don't choose your times wisely, but quiet and solitude on the 48??!! April Fools is next week!

I will grant you that truth about timing, fer shur! Cathie and I are often complimenting one another on our "impeccable timing" in that we generally have summits to ourselves and are leaving as others approach. We get pretty lucky, but like most of you, we are up and out early. When I hike solo I also manage to find myself alone on long stretches. Believe it or not - and I know you're leaning toward not - I DO hike non-list-4k peaks especially in the crazy tourist season to avoid the crowds.

I think on 75% of my initial 4000 footer hikes I saw fewer than 5 people, and probably 25% of them I saw no one. You can find quiet and solitude on almost any hike if you time it right... unless it's for FOT48 8)

My first NH48 was Lafayette back in 2000. It was a Saturday and I specifically remember being able to park in the lot on the south bound side. i.e. Lafayette Place/Lonesome Lake. It was about an 9:00 AM start. I also remember that it was not that crazy on top and it was a gorgeous day. And as for the rest, it's pretty much like it was for Kris. Other than my last peak, I was done in 2008. I think this whole over the top NH48 craze, started about 3 years ago and has grown exponentially out of control over the past 3 years. But, since there's no way to regulate the number of hikers in the WMNF, just suck it up. :P

Ipod and blinders might help. 8)

I agree. I had solitude on most of my 48, but the last few were mobbed.
Owl's Head baffled me - it was a rainy day, and I must've passed 15-20 people (not on the main trail, either... I'm talking about people specifically doing Owl's Head).

Tecumseh and Osceola are way too crowded now.

I'd have to say a lot of my 48 were also bare. Weekday hiking and early starts for the win! Owls head on a rainy day kind of makes sense. The only view is from the slide. Other wise 17 miles of woods and 6 of it e Lincoln woods trail.

I think everyone has pretty much stated what I think. Weekdays and early starts are the best way to avoid crowds now. In the Whites, Acadia, Monadnock, Chocorua... wherever. You can still get some peace and quiet if you can do that. As Joe stated the real craze seems to have started relatively recently. Social media? The Grid game? Who knows why, but the AMC48 in general are way too overcrowded to expect solitude these days unless you can hike on weekdays and/or get early starts. If you hiked in winter on the 48 ten+ years ago it was actuall surprising to see anyone else. Summer was busy but not like today. Why, when I was a boy... :D

Woo hoo, 3/5ths of Hardcore Jobobrity have new avatars. C'mon Mike and Bob, time for some new 'tars yo!

And I don't want to necessarily go on an anti-grid rant I do have to say that, for better or worse, I believe that has been a huge factor in the increase of traffic. It is only my opinion, but I do believe that the grid goes directly against the intentions of the founding members of the 48 list. But since that genie is out of the bottle we are simply going to have to accept and adapt. 8)
