 Hiker death in King Ravine
Does anyone have any updates? I'm not finding anything except a lot of snowmobile injuries.

I have read that Grey Knob caretakers had found some gear recently. Speculate that it may have belonged to Mr. Hallock

Wonder if this is the same or if there's more than one Timothy Hallock in Orient NY? Sad no matter who it is but would go to show it can happen to anyone, anytime if this is him.

Also noted in that linked forum is that yaktrax have many forms. Some pedestrian, some more aggressive.

A tragedy for sure. I would never wish this upon anyone or their families.

I haven't seen anything concrete about his equipment or the mountains conditions. They do make Yak-Trax XTR which are essentially Hillsound Trail Crampons which is considered good equipment and all many people use. It sounds like he was experienced enough to know what equipment to use (assuming he had crampons also) and without more info it's pretty hard to make any judgements on this unfortunate situation. Slip and fall. Medical emergency. Who knows. Sad ending either way.

The trails are seriously dangerous right now. I went to do a quick hike down to Glen Ellis Falls yesterday morning. Had spikes and trekking poles. If not for the fence post in these last set of stairs, I'd have come close to going in the Ellis River. The entire trail, stairs, was insane ice.

Spikes are basically useless right now.

That's some serious flo right there. It's funny, I'm headed out Thursday for a day hike and this weekend for some backpacking and have been pouring over trip reports from the Daks to Maine. Everyone says how icy it is. Flo, hard packed blue ice trails, yellow ice bulges, solid alpine zones...Ice ice and more ice. Everyone says crampons may be a better idea. Yet almost nobody uses anything but spikes. Do people not have crampons or are they just too lazy to put them on?

I wish this could have been under more pleasant circumstances. Welcome to the forum EZhiker! Enjoy your stay here with a more relaxed hiking crowd. If you have questions, feel free to ask the populace.

Re: Hiker death in King Ravine
Regardless of what something costs. If you need it. You need it. Needs are if course, different than wants. If I want to go up a certain trail and need crampons. I'd rather have them. If I don't have those needs I may end up turning back and going home or becoming stuck requiring rescue. The 150 bucks I spent on crampons is a pittance compared to the assurance that I can go where I need to.

The cost disparity between the high end yaktrax and their competition is irrelevant. If it meets a need than it has done it's job. We still don't know, and perhaps never will know, what caused this man to pass. I'd have to defer to his expertise since he was a professional guide. It could have been a heart attack like on little haystack a few weeks ago. No amount of gear could have given him a safety net in that case.

Well I may need the crampons to not get stuck in a situation. Misjudgement going up on section that I could not come down without added gear.

Brand recognition also has to do with economics yo. I had no idea tak trax made anything above those sidewalk class spring looking pieces of gear. I had written them off of anything else based upon bad perception. I now know better and may just check them out when it comes time for something new.
