The Adirondacks have a similar program for trailhead stewards and alpine stewards to help educate about the fragile environment above treeline. Seems like a good program and I wish I could more regularly get weekend off to be part of the one in the Whites. Maybe someday.

Sadly it's pretty easy to envision a scenario where some short tempered noob know-it-all takes offense at even the slightest bit of cautionary advice and loses his mind over it.

As someone who has seen the friendly gesture you give drivers who annoy you I can say I agree you may not have the right temperament for that position. :D

(And because it apparently annoys someone when I do this, and far from me to disappoint :D   )

P.S.

It sounds like the job involves asking this simple question:

Sometimes I just offer general thoughts. They aren't even advice, and don't even approach cautionary. Under such a circumstance I couldn't imagine anything going wonky even a little bit.

. It's also helpful that we work in pairs. Not just because of the volume of hikers, but because walking away or diverting to your partner might be best. You don't have to catch everyone. Even a sizable dent is important.

A lot of it is about reading people, especially the non-verbal cues. There are some people you just don't talk to. For most people, they need info anyways and are usually appreciative. The intro session helps with a lot of techniques, but some of it comes down to the whole "interpersonal relations" thing.

I signed up to do this last year but did not do my 2 shifts. After thinking about it, I thought it might not be for me and here's the reason. A couple of the people who'd done it the year before mentioned a few instants where someone they tried to enlighten about the dangerous conditions on a given day, or someone who just totally looked unprepared, got confrontational. I would not be able to hold back this, "look A-HOLE, we're just trying to prevent you from getting into trouble. So knock off the F-ing attitude!" And I'm serious when I say I'd probably react that way. So it's probably best I don't do this.

Joe, we can do a site together. I'll bring my dog's bark control collar. When you seem to be getting out of control I'll just push the remote!

Since nobody will recognize me I'm going to show up in nothing more than flip flops, jeans and a t-shirt with a bottle of Mountain Dew and a bad attitude to test out your groups interpersonal skills.

Well NOW you've done it and will fit in with the masses - bring a kid or two in tow and you're a shoe-in.

Seriously....I would recognize you. I went back and studied the Survivorman thread.

We're up to 36 volunteers for training and still looking for more. Not all the spots were filled last year. Newbies no worries, you will get sufficient mentoring.

Hope to see you Kathy and Joe at WMNF HQ in May?

p.s., I plan to combine this work with some trail adopter work in the afternoon each day. Just an idea as long as you are up there.

Reminder, this Saturday is the big day. Everyone who volunteers gets a free official WMNF Trail Steward t-shirt.

See you there?
