I'm missing the point of the article honestly.

Yea, it smells pretty hard of someone pushing a conspiracy theory agenda. Reading a few of the comments, apparently the author is somewhat known for that.

That said, I will be curious to hear what, if anything, can be learned from the ME's examination. 3000ft is a long way to be off a trail, though certainly not impossible depending on what may have happened leading up to it.

There's always at least one conspiracy nut in the house. You know we didn't go to the moon, right? 8)

Pretty strange honestly to end up not finding a way out and dying of starvation. Woods can be thick but it's not like she was 100 miles from civilization. I have always heard you can got 2 days without water but 2 weeks without food. I would like to think in two weeks I could find my way out somehow if I wasn't injured. Maybe not. Sad ending whatever happened.

 Re: UPDATE: Geraldine Largay
It's very odd that she died with no injuries. I'm not suggesting that she should have been out setting up figure four deadfalls. But unless she was on a razorblade budget of food getting from one place to another. She should have had some food. And at that point you'd drink any water you could come across. Bacteria be damned. The picture painted in my head by the articles I've read, is that she laid down to die. Which is possible, but out of character. A tragedy for sure. Tower 7 here we come.

[dragon poking] I think it is the money grubbing AMC's fault as well as those no-account New Hampshire Fish and Game leeches. (who cares if it was in Maine) [/dragon poking]

GG.

It's The Rule of Threes, I believe you are referring.

In general, you can survive:

3 Minutes w/o air
3 Days w/o water
3 Weeks w/o food

Wow. Something about this story still doesn't add up... an experienced thru-hiker steps off the trail for a few minutes and becomes permanently lost? Someone with the skills to survive almost a month in the woods, but can't find her way back to the trail or a nearby dirt road? Possibly heat exhaustion and not thinking clearly?

RIP whatever the case may be ...

 Re: UPDATE: Geraldine Largay
Sadly, hiking the AT for months does not mean you have the skills to survive off trail. The AT is a well-worn path for much of its length, I think those sections in Maine might be the most wild. I met a through hiker who said she had been on the trail for "months" and yet was hiking in circles on Mt. Adams because she she couldn't grasp that Israel Ridge Path coincides with the Gulfside Trail for a half mile (she was hiking SOBO and trying to reach The Perch). She pulled out her map so I could show her and she couldn't even show me where we were on the map. There is a big difference between having a map and compass and knowing how to properly use them.

It is quite sad, but I'm glad they were at least able to find the body and give some closure to the family.

 Re: UPDATE: Geraldine Largay
Very sad and very strange. I'm no expert with a compass but if like to think in a life and death situation I could set a course and stick with it for a few miles until I hit a trail or road or whatever. Just as strange that they combed the area and missed her completely. RIP unfortunately.

This is probably the most complete story we'll get. There's some interesting insight to the SAR process, sounds like a few misunderstandings pushed the search effort to the wrong area and by the time they got back on track it was too late.
