Re: Another 3 Bite the Dust. Crockers & Redington 7/30/16
I did those three early last fall with a friend as we were working on another round of the NEHH. I'd done those three several times before, but it has been at least a dozen years since the last time. The route to the Crockers and back hadn't changed much, and in the past I'd always done Redington by itself as a separate hike. But, from the reports I'd seen there was a well-defined herd part from S. Crocker over, and so we choose that route. When we got to the boundary swath in question, I could see that it ran in a straight line for a couple of miles, there were 3 logs piled up in front, so ... we turned left. Plus, I had a GPS track which clearly showed it bearing left, so off we went. I was rather amazed at how defined the herd path had become.
I'd been up & down Redington via the logging roads several times over the years, so to be on the safe side, that's how we descended. However, about 1/2 mile from the top there was a cairn on the left, with what looked like a well-used path, and we were tempted. And, about 1/2 mile from the AT I spotted a corresponding cairn on the left which was likely the exit/entry point into the woods. The last couple of miles of road walk were a bit tedious, but ... it was a nice fall day in Maine. Not a bad ending to a fine day.
If I did Redington again, I would head down from that cairn. Am pretty sure it cuts the wide part of the loop, and probably puts you back on the road in about an hour.
