 Abandoned Highway I-95 Newburyport, MA
Life has been extremely busy researching a new adventure base camp mobile (RV), the search is over, so hopefully we can get back to what we really enjoy doing. :D
The yard work was also backing up, but we finally got to get out and do something on Sunday and get back in time for some of that yard work. We headed to Newburyport, Ma to go and explore the abandoned section of I-95 that runs between Hale Street and RT113. It is on about 1.1 miles long, but the Little River Trail System is there too, so we got to spend the afternoon exploring the remains of the highway and there are geocaches too. 8)
Parking can be found on either of the two roads and there are signs. Hale Street can hold 3-4 cars and coming in from RT 113 there is more parking available there. The place has become a recreational area for the public. Biking and pets are permitted. Coming in from Hale Street brings you down a trail along a marsh to the abandoned section of the highway. The remaining highway is being reclaimed by Mother Nature slowly but surely. There are a lot of faded highway striping along the stretch of road. When this section was closed in 1977, MassHighway used it for stripe testing until the mid 1990’s. All of the catch basins are covered with curbstone to prevent anyone from falling in. We did find one of the covers at the RT 113 end of the highway.
Over all it is an easy hike and one that could easily been done with the family or the family dog. To do just the abandoned section of the highway, well, it’s however long 2.2 miles takes you to do. Add in some of the side trails and it could make for a nice afternoon. There is a Vernal Pool…somewhere! We didn’t find it.
We did make our usual video on this small adventure, for anyone interested…

It was closed the year I was born. I'm happy to say I've aged a little better than it has! :D

Never knew there was an abandoned part of I-95! Looks like a nice walk. I'll have to do this one with my grandmother who lives in the area.
