4K Training... Complete! Mt Carrigain 4/23/16
Once again I was upping my mileage and elevation gain to try and resume
hitting the NE67 peaks. I came up with 2 plans. 1 was Garfield, the other
Carrigain. I figured since Garfield was so close to my last couple hikes, I'd
do Carrigain. And, I hadn't been there since 2011. The weather called for mostly
cloudy in the AM to mostly sunny. I figured by the time I summited, I'd be good.
Not!

Hike started like this.

Ended like this. Or I should say, ended at the summit like this.

Carrigain hates me. Here's my winter Carrigain. Look familiar? :(

Not to mention it was blowing 30+ I'd say and a pretty cold wind-chill.
As far as the ice went, it stated be steady somewhere around 3000'. But
because of the warmer temps we's bee having, it was a bit softer than
lately. Making the spikes work well enough. It was however, the most miles
I've had to deal with it. Man, that trail just keeps going. Not to mention up high,
as Kathy had on Carter Dome, There was some mushy monorail.

As I was just about to re-enter the woods off Signal Ridge, a hiker was ascending
and looking at me. "You're Joe right?" Yes. It was Matt, a.k.a. Walrus. I did not
recognize him at all. I only met him once before in 2010 I think on a Hike-NH hike
and he had a full beard, which I mentioned to him. He also volunteered he was also
100#'s heavier back then. Good for him. He's now a hiking machine. 8) We chatted
briefly and parted ways. I left by saying you'll probably pass me on the way down.
He in fact did catch up to me with 4+ miles left and rather than leave me in his dust,
hiked the rest of the way out with me. Good seeing, and chatting with you Matt.

When all was said and done, I got the work out I wanted.

14 miles with the road, and probably 4000' in elevation gain. Knee's just a tad sore.

Shame about the lack of views but great job getting the miles back in you. That d7200 you are shooting with looks awesome.

The winds were crazy! I love the wind though so I think it's cool.

I want to do Carrigain again. Only been there once, had ok views. I want to do an overnight
and head up via Desolation Trail.

Great pics, as usual. You mentioned the loose screws - I've been waiting for the vandalism and thieving to start
with the hordes of new hikers on the rise. Figure it's only a matter of time. Alas.

Love the pic of the treetops from the tower steps. Glad to hear you're back and feeling fit.

Yeah, it's weird about the sign. I think it's new because they moved that sign post and junction a couple hundred yards. Maybe less. Almost looks like someone may have been trying to take it on the way out and someone came along.

Bummer about the views. They aren't the best, but they're pretty darn expansive. Looking forward to the reports and pics from the 67. I have a feeling I'll be revisiting a lot of them myself this year.

Well Joe, you can always try and go back for views AGAIN when I head up there this year via Desolation trail. C'mon buddy, THAT will break you in nice and good!

Beautiful shot of the trees with their frosting! I remember your old caption, "The Northern Presidentials Hate Me!" But that resolved itself. Maybe you'll get another chance someday...

You forgot the best part! Those two guys who couldn't figure out that you had to just cross the stream despite no means of conveyance. Probably for the best though, like you said, as with no traction summiting would have been unlikely. It was great running into you and hiking out. While it does you no good now, I went up South and Middle Moat afterwards, and by 6pm Carrigain(and everything else) was totally clear.

What was funny about those 2 is that we were just talking about the clueless.

So I guess referring to you as a hiking machine wasn't an exaggeration.
