 Carter Dome - our bailout
Image

The plan was to spot a car at Imp trailhead (check) and then start at 19 mile brook to head up and over south and middle carter.

All was good. Hit the trail just after 8

Image

Cathie in shirtsleeves in no time, leading the way along the 1st re-routed section. When did that happen?

Image

That's the old trail, about 15 feet closer to river. Didn't seem eroded to me.....

Image

Here's the newly erected bridge replacing the old singular plank that replaced the even older bridge. Quite elaborate eh?

Image

The old crossing

Image

Brook-y greenness

Image

Ever see the inside of a branch?

Image

We hit the ice about 3500 feet. Once on it, we stayed on it til we got back to this spot.

Image

We didn't even bother with spikes - I left mine in the car. Cathie thought she needed more weight in her pack so she carried hers.

Image

Zeta pass. Is it Zayta or Zeeta?
Image

Here we bailed on our original plan and figured we'd head to Carter Dome.
I'm still fighting the sinus infection and bronchitis and intersession always wipes me out. :|

Image

Jct with trail up to Hight. We passed. Cathie has yet to get up there.

Image

Monorail. WHAAAAAAAAT???? Crampons not so efficient here but we made it work.

Image

Summit. Why is there no elevation on these?

Image

The power of the water is amazing

Image

Cathie, looking very much like Cathie and not so much like John Denver.

Image

Seemed to take us forever but this was one trip when I wandered, meandered, sauntered and otherwise
just took my sweet a** time on trails. I had all day to get back as we were camping in Jefferson so no pressure.
Today is a rest day so I can get right back at it tomorrow to help another friend who is working on her 48.

This is scary. I had 2 primary plans yesterday. But on the way up I almost changed it to Mt Hight.
I'm guessing you had no views either given the lack of such photos? I know I got burnt.

I have a bunch of pictures of NBT a month after Irene. It was pretty bad. This is just one.
From where I was standing to across where that log is, the trail is gone. Quite the slippery
slope at that time. Very easy to end up in NB there.

I pronounce it Zay-tah, but I come from the age when the big thing was The Legend of Zelda on the old Nintendo system.

And it looks like Cathie has taken lessons from mine and Greg's school of "how to look like a fool mugging for the camera". :D

The first time I was on the new section and bridge was in early September IIRC. Someone later told me they'd been working on the re-route for a couple of years which seemed reasonable to me given the extensive amount of work, especially on that massive bridge.

Alright listen buster. We were IN the clouds. It wasn't just "cloudy". We were IN the clouds. We were one with the cloud. We were, in essence, clouds ourselves. Why go to a "view" point when the chance of a view was between zero and zero.0000000009???

I generally put together a video for my 92 y.o. mother so she can enjoy the mountains...here's the link. Check it out at about 2 mins. The summit time was pretty cool.

Why go somewhere new and different? Because it's there. And it's a nicer summit, view or no views. Why go back to a non-view point you've already seen instead??

We'll get there. On the right day.

Sez you. I actually spent an unplanned, rather uncomfortable night atop Mt. Hight

Why go back to a non-view point you've already seen instead??

Beat just turning around at Zeta Pass when I was ready to throw in the towel. It's all good GG. While the rest of the hikers from the cars that filled the lot were upon Hight and the other Carters we had the woods, once again, to ourselves. I like that.

Acadia. 8)

Really, I feel for you. I'm battling the same type of thing. Had a cold last week, it's worse, not better, this week. Wahhhh I know. But it sucks. Losing my voice, chest hurts from coughing... last thing I'd want to do right now is fight the 6 inches of snow they got up north today. So, go to Acadia, hike up South Ridge Trail to Cadillac. Enjoy the sunshine and salty air. Add in some smaller hike after like the beehive... you're probably not going to make that day trip, but I would.

Isn't that something like a five hour drive?
