Left at five, started up the wrong trail at seven.
Started the correct trail at eight. 1.8 Miles down Stratton Pond Road, we parked. About .3 or so miles down the dirt road, the trail actually started. Didnt want to bang up the oil pan on my Sonata too much. Probably wouldnt have though. Any four wheel drive vehicle could make it easily.
Fire Wardens trail right off crossed a brook that fed into Stratton Pond.

The trail run along the pond with some pretty decent views of Sugarloaf off in the distance.

There were two or three camp sites along the first .2 or so miles. After about a quarter mile or so, we came up to a sign with everything we needed to know.

1.4 miles later, we took the Horns Pond Trail from the Fire Wardens Trail

Amanda (birthday girl) found some Lady Slippers and toad

The Firewardens trail heads from the parking area and connects with the AT at campsite on the Col between Avery and West Peak. About half way up the Fire Wardens trail, I decided that I wanted to see Horns Pond, so we took a detour to the pond when we saw the Horns Pond trail sign about half way up the Fire Wardens trail. We probably added about 3-4 miles to the trip by doing so. I thought it was worth it. Great views from the Horns and the pond area is real nice. After adding up all the trail distances and including the road, it worked out to be a 12.3 mile trip. The trails were well marked and well taken care of, as good as any in the Whites. Both, Horns Pond and FireWardens trails both had good footing, which was great considering how wet the area got from yesterdays thunderstorms. The forecast called for clear skys all day. Until we began to descend back down the Fire Wardens trail, we had a pretty thick overcast above us that looked like it could open up at any time. The wind was pretty insane. Kept the bugs away. I was reminded how much I like the wind when the mosquitoes and black flies found me back at the parking area. The trip overall was much more rugged than I assumed. I highly suggest the same trip that we took to anyone interested. Turned out to be a pretty good fathers day.

Great report and awesome pics. The Bigelow Range is superb.
Did an overnight at Horns Pond a long time ago and it
still ranks as one of my all time favorites. I believe I
read on ViewsFromTheTop that the fire tower on Avery
Peak will soon be removed. Love the view down to Flagstaff
Lake in particular. The Bigelows are on my return "list", for
sure. 8)

I didnt realize how large Flagstaff was until I was looking down at it. Returning in a year or two is on my to-do list as well. Good times.

Joe, don't you drive 4-5 hours to the Great North woods for hikes? You get up for tat but not spectacular peaks in Maine, most of which are the same drive time away? To each their own I guess! :D

Some of the 4ks in Maine rival almost anything in New Hampshire. Katahdin, Bigelow, Saddleback & The Horn, Abraham and North Brother in that order are definitely worth the trip. The other 4ks aren't bad either but if you're not working on a list there's better hikes out there if you ask me.

I too didn't realize how big Flagstaff was until I saw it. The Round Barn tentsites are as great a camping spot as you'll find anywhere. I always sing it's praises and maybe what amazes me most about it is that it's free. Why do all the other places in NH and VT charge a fee and this prime spot is free?

Here's a shot of the lake from Avery Peak. The Round Barn area is at the very bottom right of the lakeshore. Also a close up of the campground area from the summit with views all the way out to Katahdin in the top center of the photo. The yellow dots are the 9 tent sites. Amazing spot. One of my longterm goals is to stay at the site on the little island. Hopefully on a hot summer day.
