 Mt Moriah 12.31.05
Ghostdog, wildpeaks and hikerdave met Saturday 12.31.05 at the Stony Brook Trail parking lot in Gorham, NH to winter hike Mt Moriah (4049'). My only concern was the brook crossing, which earlier in the summer was too high to even attempt to cross. Then it was a voluminious waterfall. On this hike it was crossable with a nice and handy 6" thick snow bridge. The trail was well broken out thanks to previous snowshoe hikers, a little rain days earlier that froze, and a 2" snow cover increasing to 8" with pretty drifts at the ledges. We barebooted most of the ascent until the Cartier-Moriah trail where we put on our 10 point crampons. The views seen at the summit made it difficult to leave. How beautiful the mountains are in the winter.

Another wonderful day hiking 10 miles, an elevation gain of 3150', with clear skies, great views, and superb fellowship with friends for 8 hours. Our last hike of the year and many since the beginning of it. Life is good!
