Hey guys,

I finally hit my 1st 4000'er in almost 5 years. This was # 21 for me.

Mt. Pierce
Date - 11/12/05
Trails - Crawford Path, Mizpah Cutoff
Recommended Equipment - Trekking poles
Total hike time - 5.5 hrs.

We started off on the Crawford Path. The AMC guide lists this as easy to moderate. My friend and I got a good laugh most of the way up about that. I've hike a lot in the whites, and I wouldn't consider this easy to moderate. It is a continuous uphill climb with very little flatspots. Still though it was a joy to hike.

We were in our baselayers and gloves till about 4200 feet. The wind was picking up by then and the winter gear came out. I was fine with just my base, hat, gloves, and summit jacket on though.

There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the wind was mild. The ice was getting a little much near the summit, and crampons would have been very nice. One of the reasons we hit the Mizpah cutoff on the way back, was to stay clear of the ice. I'm glad we looped it though, because we enjoyed the cutoff a lot.

The footing was unstable a lot of the trip, but it was manageable, and neither of us took a spill. I couldn't have asked for a better hiking day, and it was the perfect start to completing the list.

I would love to add some photos, but I don't see the option. Is it only by html code?

Great to read of your adventure!

Up Crawford Path is certainly one of my favorites. Keep hiking and keep the trip reports flowing. Thank you for the report!

I can indeed post them, I'll probably add this to the Readers' Trips section. Great report, keep up the good work, I'm still trying to get my day of hiking that was given to me as a Fathers' Day gift!!

Great, I'll send them out in the next day or two. I hope you get your day of hiking in soon. If Winter keeps holding off, I may get another 4000'er in. Probably hitting Monadnock this weekend.
