 The Waterfalls of Appalachia!
Saturday, April 14th, saw a super day to hike to beautiful waterfalls in Appalachia. 5 hikers cancelled at the last minute afraid of possible bad weather which never arrived. Tara, a program service coordinator from South Portland; Peter, a banker from Franklin, joined ghostdog and me to seek out some of the 15 waterfalls in the area. We were on our 6th when I got the bright idea I wanted a new avatar beside a waterfall. Walking on ice I just announced was too thin for my weight, I continued for 2 or 3 steps, heard a loud crack, and dropped knee deep into the ice cold water. Then in slow motion, my body fell right shoulder first on to the ice which broke apart getting my right sleeve to take on water. I'm now right side down in the water, with my full winter pack of 35-40 pounds, struggling to find a way to stand, swim, and keep my nose above the frigid, ice cold water. Visions of drowning entered my thoughts. "Help me," I asked. Peter extended a trekking pole and it separated in the middle. The other was used, and I slowly stood knee deep in the water. After a few seconds of catching my breath, Tara joined Peter in securing my wrists to allow me to climb up a two foot thick ice bank to safety. I changed my socks, added a bread bag over each foot, and retied my soaking wet leather hiking boots. We walked to the other bank of the falls took more pix and I announced "Darn it, I want an avatar of the falls!" The others laughed as I inched my way to the falls determined to get that avatar that I worked so hard to get on the other bank. Pix taken, cold, wet, time to return to the vehicle. We then drove to J's Corner in Gorham where we dined, drank, and had super fellowship for hours!
