Anyone have any good (or bad) experiences at campgrounds in the Whites around Memorial Day weekend as far as black flies go? I know they're going to be there, but some places are better than others, I just don't know which since we usually go to Acadia that weekend specifically because they have next to none, but we want to give the Whites another chance. If it's miserable we'll never go there again that weekend until the kids are big enough to swat them away and get slathered in DEET so any ideas on which places to make base camp at would be awesome.

Take this with a boulder of salt, because this has been such an unusual year our experience may not necessarily be yours.

We've been to Sugar Loaf II a couple of times around Memorial Day Weekend and I don't recall them being much of a problem. Prema was relatively unscathed, she's the one you want to go by (I wonder if ethnicity is a draw for them, they've always gone after my kids much worse than me). We stayed there that time of year at least three or four times. We were doing the list. We went to Hale, Wiiley, Monroe... I don't recall them being much of an issue. Then, two years ago we stayed one night at White Ledge (by Chocorua, there's even a trail leading there from this campground. Not much of a problem there, either. Another time, during my vacation at that time of year, we camped out not too far after you cross over into the Pemi Wilderness after that bridge at the end of everyone's favorite 2.9 mile walk. We did not have much trouble those couple of days. I mention this, because the Hancock campground is near there.

#blackfliesmatter

They've always been terrible everywhere I've gone.
I just go with long pants and a bug net.

That has always been my experience too. Worst ever was at Dry River Campground, but they've been bad everywhere in the Whites that weekend from my experience. If there's no secret haven it's probably back to Acadia as usual where there are virtually none. The 2,5 & 8 year olds aren't at a point yet where I can just stick them in head nets, pants, long sleeves and smother them in DEET.

June is the worst as a generalization for NH. Consider going as far north as you can. The progression of flies is north to south.
