Then you are going to have to explain to me the guy, with New Hampshire plates, I was behind yesterday towing a trailer so grossly overloaded with a power lift that the tires were rubbing on the fender on one side, throwing billowing (and noxious smelling) smoke out behind him. He had to have noticed this, and to make things worse he was doing 45 in a 30 MPH zone to boot. I almost wonder how far he got down the road before his tires melted and exploded.

I'm not saying you won't see a lot of dumb s**t from NH drivers, and people driving like a-holes for that matter. In fact I'd guess what you describe is actually way more common in NH and away from the cities of eastern Mass. But the need to be first, which is what we were originally talking about, I stick by my guns. That's a city thing, and since most of the large cities are in eastern Mass or close to the border, that's where they come from. You drive through rural NH, VT or ME and I doubt you'll see it anywhere near as much from the farmer in his pick-up truck.

Mmmmmmm....I don't know about that. I can't say I have been in every nook and cranny of this state, but Greg and I have come pretty close. From Pittsburgh to Winchester NH I have seen the "gotta be first" attitude.

P.S. And for that matter, I/we have seen it in rural VT too (so, in other words, New England is an equal opportunity hotbed for being an a$$hole.) :D

I don't think there's any question that there's a difference in driving tendencies between MA and NH. I'm sure we drive each other crazy when we're driving in the other's state (and I'm suspicious that a lot of the aggressive NH plates are MA people who moved to Nashua or Hampton or whatever). I think we all get that people are more aggressive in Boston, and so everybody has to be more aggressive in Boston, and then when that's your norm you're probably frustrated by these slow, timid NH drivers (yes, generalizations). And of course there are bad drivers everywhere ("bad" often meaning "not to my liking," of course).

For what it's worth I'll say this -- I've lived a few different places from a SD town of 10,000 to the Minneapolis/St Paul metro of 3+ million. By FAR the most frustrating drivers, in my experience, were Louisville Kentucky. Oh my. When we moved from there to NH, we found the driving to be shockingly refreshing -- and specifically the HUGELY improved ability to merge, as this thread has complained about. Just my/our experience.

Yeah Joe!!!! I've only dreamt of that happening.

I agree with Grindboy as well.

Tailgaters still make me crazy though.

Tailgating certainly doesn't make me want to go any quicker.

Must be a common reaction.

A lot of that stuff is just a-holes being a-holes, they just happen to be behind the wheel but they're probably like that in their everyday lives too. The thing that aggravates me most on the roads I think is someone who drives 10mph under the limit forever until they hit passing zones, then speed up to try and keep you from passing, then slow down again, speed up...
