 Crazy I-93 1/26/14
I was coming home from a bushwhack this morning, when some idiot caused a major accident. Ever since they raised the speed limit on I-93 to 70 mph, people think there is no speed limit. It was a slick and windy morning. Snow was blowing onto the road, and the wind was making it hard to stay in your lane…but this guy just had to weave in and out of heavy traffic. (People were going home from a weekend in New Hampshire). He passed me so fast that I felt my CR-V get pushed. This was at exit 21, south bound. Coming up to exit 18, traffic stopped. There were about 5 cars smashed and disabled. As I got to the end of the jam, I saw the jerk off that passed me a while back. I hope the people he hurt, tell the police how fast he was going and that he cause all of this. IMO, he had to be going way over 90 mph when he passed me. Police, rescue and fire engines were just arriving. Real nice!

Here’s the idiot who caused the accident

That's awful! At least you did not get hurt this time.

This reminds me of the Maine Turnpike. We were visiting friends in Scarborough, and in the 42 miles between the NH border and there we saw at least 10 incidents during snow squalls. Mostly SUVs who probably had a false sense of security.... Recently, we saw a Maine State Police cruiser that had been broadsided. How'd you like to be the idiot who did that! I think the cop was o.k., he was standing off to the side in a safe location.

Not disagreeing with you about this guy being an idiot, but the speed limit change had nothing to do with it. I've seen tons of people driving well over 80 on I-93, at least one pretty much every time I'm on that road, and long before the limit was raised. Of course, now some folks are going to use the limit of 70 as an excuse to do 80. Save some gas folks, slow down!

I know that some folks that were coming up North to join me on a hike yesterday morning said the roads were really tricky North of Concord in spots. Some people just can't seem to grasp that slippery roads means SLOW DOWN!

Hopefully no one got seriously hurt by that "genius"...

Beckie: we had a conversation on the trails yesterday in fact about how SUVs seem to make up almost all vehicles that you see spun out in ditches. One member of our party used to drive daily on I-93 in the Manchester/Concord stretch and told us about how he would use the number of SUVs spun out in the median on his commute as a gauge of how the roads were. "Hey, it was a 5-SUV day today!".

You're right madmattd. I'm always the slow guy on the road. And when it was 65 mph, I would set my cruz control to 69 mph. So I was kinda speeding. Never the less, I was, and still now, one of the slowest people driving I noticed. People always blow passed me. And sometimes they're even pissed at me for going so slow! Go figure?

Always love a driving thread.

Even with the change, I still hover around 70-75 mph. I don't usually go any faster, as I desperately need a front-end alignment and my truck shakes a lot when going faster than 75. Plus, I got a ticket about 1.5 years ago, and I don't intend to make the same mistake again. I figure if I don't go any higher than 10 over, I'm good. Also, I'm going to go for my CDL after I turn 21, so I need to keep my nose out of trouble.

From what I've seen with the speed limit change, the speeds of the drivers haven't really changed. I still see plenty of people going under 70 despite the signs clearly stating that you can go 70.

Edit: if the highway is bad (due to snow, heavy rain, ice, what have you), I definitely drive accordingly.

Just to clear up any possible confusion: my speeding days are long gone. Ever since that ticket, I've slowed down a lot. Can't afford to obliterate a full tank of gas in two hours. Or make any more "donations" to the state  .

I apologize if I stirred anyone up. Guess I just got all riled up by the new limit. Now that I had my fun, I'm going to be more realistic: in the long run, I'll be making a lot of trips up north in the future (including one tomorrow to bag the Kinsmans), and if I keep going 70-75, I'm going to get absolutely horrendous gas mileage. I'm talking 10 MPG or less. Better to slow down, like Matt said.

The police are definitely more lenient on 93 than on 16. I made a rather sizeable donation last month. However I do laugh at people who end up on the side of a wide flat highway. Lose control? Just Dont touch a pedal. Steer into the slide and motor on.

Ya know what I love? When some guy is behind me, and I'm already going about 4 to 5 mph over the speed limit. And the guy behind me is all pissed cause I'm going too slow. (GO AROUND ME IDIOT!) Then after a while they decide to go around me and either give me the figure Image, or mouth something I probably shouldn't say here. But I love when I see down the road, that vehicle pulled over by a trooper. Oh what joy! I always give a little beep on the horn and wave at the guy.
They seem to NOT enjoy that. ImageHaha! "Ca Ching New Hampshire"
