Interesting event if you paddle in Worcester county
Hi all,
Tonight at the Ayer public library from 6:00-7:30 is a presentation sponsored by the Friends of the Nashua called "Work of 1000". The Work of 1000 is an organization started by Marion Stoddart, a local woman who was the sole visionary of a cleaned up Nashua river.

As recently as the 1970s, the Nashua was one of the ten most polluted rivers in the US. Marion was the person who raised money and awareness to clean up the river. Today, it is a wonderful river that once again provides a habitat to many species and recreation opportunities for all of us.

The presentation tonight will include a one hour video of the Nashua River cleanup, followed by Q&A with Marion. Since I live 10 minutes from the North Branch of the Nashua and paddle it at least once a week, I'm particularly interested in this story and will definitely be attending.

"Life in General" because this isn't hiking and isn't in New Hampshire, but its relevant (I think) because many of us live in communities that wouldn't exist if not for the Nashua.

Here are some pics for your enjoyment. I think they speak for themselves:

It was a great presentation. They are actually doing a total of ten presentations at various Nashua river communities. On Facebook, they are "Marion Stoddart Work of 1000", and will post when they have new events.

I definitely recommend it. The biggest take away was that any one ordinary person can do the work of 1000 people if they just have a vision and stick to it. She decided to clean up the river in order to have a mission and purpose to carry on her whole life: lucky for the river.

Hi all,
Marion Stoddart, the activist who led the effort to clean the Nashua, will be showing her film and delivering a talk with Q&A this Thursday in Shirley.

I saw this presentation in Ayer, and it was wonderful. It gives you tremendous exposure to real conservation efforts going on right in your back yard, as well as provides an endearing history of a fascinating river.

If you are a paddler, this is a must!

Free film screening & talk with Marion & the NRWA:
Thursday, July 11!
Hazen Memorial Library
3 Keady Way
Shirley, MA
6:00-7:30pm
